As we approach the end of June, I write this blog from multiple locations: a train en route to Brussels, a hotel room in Brussels, a train en route to Zurich, and a business hotel in Zurich.

EDINBURGH – A WEEK OF SCIENCE AND RE-ORIENTATION
Two weeks ago, I visited Scotland for the first time to attend a workshop on bridging the communities of mathematical modeling and physical volcanology. Despite a brain foggy from jetlag and weary with burnout, I had an opportunity to listen and share interesting science with a lovely group of scientists, including an industrious friend and colleague. But the real prize was the stunning city of Edinburgh and its amicable inhabitants. I loved the city’s walkability, history, and cuisine. Scotland wasn’t even in my top 20 countries to visit, although the Scottish Highlands have been on my radar since I visited Iceland due to their exquisite geological formations. Nevertheless, I found myself wishing for another week or two in Scotland, and I eagerly anticipate a return visit. Professionally, I believe I made connections that will provide future opportunities for interesting science. Perhaps more surprising than my fondness for Scotland was a feeling of being adrift – of not knowing what I want to do next. Of wondering whether I’ve imprisoned myself in a cage of my own design.
LONDON – CHILDHOOD DREAMS
By the time I arrived in London, I’d adjusted to UK time and realized that sticky toffee pudding is my desert of choice. I’ve wanted to visit England since childhood. Standing at the base of the Elizabeth Tower (home of Big Ben), in front of Buckingham Palace, and under the marvelous dome of St. Paul satiated ever-present yet long buried childhood dreams. I also visited the British Museum, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, and the London Eye. One of the things I loved most about London, admittedly, was its similarity to Tokyo. Both are global cities with wonderful public transportation that link its many diverse neighborhoods. Every section of the city felt unique and lively. The food was fantastic and there was so much to do! The cherry on top was a top floor hotel room with a stunning view of the skyline east of Kensington.
BRUSSELS – PARIS
I arrived in Brussels with very little insight into Belgium. I literally didn’t know what to expect outside of a few YouTube videos and Wikipedia. What I found was a delightful city in which people moved about with a certain ease (e.g., lots of cyclists and a lack of blaring horns except during the general strike). The old city center was inundated with throngs of locals and tourists. I enjoyed a 5.5-hour chocolate-beer tour where I learned more than I ever thought I would on the history of chocolate and beer in Belgium. And, yes, I had a glass of the best beer in the world – which had the texture and taste of a brandy. Given the convenience of a 2-hour train ride, I couldn’t resist a daytrip to the city of love and lights. Paris may have abused my feet, but I finally got to see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Sacre-Coeur (and those infamous steps from John Wick 4), and the exterior of the Louvre. And the pastries were fantastic!
WHAT DO I WANT IN LIFE? CRAZED HOPE IN A CRAZY WORLD
I am desperately trying to vacation between a workshop and a conference. After an academic year fraught with challenges, it is very important that I unplug and unwind. As alluded to earlier, I have been reflecting on my life experiences and aspirations. In times of chaos and collapse, it is difficult to dream. To envision a more beautiful world. Or imagine yourself having the mental capacity to pursue a singular goal. Being far away from home has typically put life into perspective for me. But that added perspective can sometimes cloud your view. Perhaps I’ll arrive at some stunning realization in the next week or two. Then again, figuring out what we want is a lifelong quest with an ever allusive answer.
