It’s peak summer! Time to grind and reflect.
SONG INSPIRATION
This month’s blog is inspired by Yung L.A.’s 2008 track Ain’t I.
SWITZERLAND – ANOTHER WEEK OF SCIENCE
Despite the oppressive heatwave that descended over Europe in late June, I had a wonderful time in Zurich and Geneva. While the cultural differences in either city and its respective canton were fascinating, I treasured their similarities: efficient mass transit, walkability, and cleanliness. I would love to return to Switzerland and spend more time in other parts of the country…if it weren’t so damned expensive! 35 USD for a subpar poke bowl – get outta here! Of course, the main reason for my visit, which precipitated this Eurotrip, was an international volcano conference – IAVCEI. My thesis student and I gave an oral and poster presentation, respectively, in the non-air-conditioned conference venue. I gave one of my best talks, and I make this claim based on unsolicited feedback after the talk from several attendees and how I felt while presenting, that is, an overwhelming sense of ease. Teaching has definitely improved my presentation anxiety. My student also received a healthy number of visitors at her poster, which outlined her preliminary work and upcoming senior thesis project. In spite of the extreme heat, I enjoyed catching up with old friends and learning new science.
EUROTRIP 2025
My first true Eurotrip covered six countries in four weeks. I had a chance to visit historic places I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid, eat delicious local cuisine, and make lasting memories. And I now have a list of places I’d love to revisit such as London and Madrid. This trip also gave me a lot of time to reflect on my family, friends, career aspirations, etc. I’m still processing many of those emotions, and I foresee a productive therapy session in the near future. I’m so fortunate to have had the opportunity – and believe me, that’s not lost on me in the current climate. I’m also wondering how to apply the lessons learned during my travels to my life stateside. How can I incorporate those behaviors that brought me such joy and comfort to daily life? The quest continues.
SUMMER 2025
New England summers are fire. Literally. Because it’s hot and air-conditioning ain’t common. OK, but I really love summers here. Long sunny days, outdoor activities, slower pace of life, more socializing, and time for research. Thanks to a later start in the morning, I can savor a cup of tea on the sofa before jumping into work. I’ve had a surprising amount of fun doing science. My two summer interns have been kicking ass on their projects, which has resulted in fun and productive meetings. I’ve had more time for coffee dates with friends which has provided me with gusts of motivation to write. Not to mention, the great weather has been conducive to grilling, ice cream, and pop-up vendors. Despite the length of summer, it always passes too quickly. We’re over half way through with Fall semester just ~ 5 weeks away.
THE HORIZON
As one of my best friends hilariously stated, we’re entering season 3 of the job hunt. Professionally and politically, the horizon is murky. I teach a new course in the Fall aimed at first year college students, and I am very excited to introduce them to Earth and planetary science, space exploration, and hope for the future. Beyond the Fall is anyone’s guess. I’m submitting applications for all relevant permanent positions, but I expect a much smaller pool of job ads this cycle given the relentless attacks on science funding. I find myself in somewhat of a fugue state – going through the motions with a numbing sense of reality. Is that healthy? Maybe – given the state of our country. All I can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
